Recap of the STEAM Expo at Wilkesboro Motor Speedway
What happens when you mix the history of the Wilkesboro Motor Speedway with the future of technology? You get an incredible day of learning, curiosity, and high-speed fun!
Yesterday, the RiverStreet team joined students from across the region for the STEAM Expo. While the speedway is famous for fast cars, we were there to talk about something even faster: Fiber Internet.
The “Magic” of Light Speed
It turns out that explaining how data travels at the speed of light is just as cool as the technology itself! We spent the day teaching students the “magic” behind fiber optics.
We took a deep dive into:
- The Science of Fiber: How we use hair-thin strands of glass to carry massive amounts of information across the world in an instant.
- Speed on and off the Track: We compared the roar of the engines on the track to the silent, lightning-fast pulses of light that power our internet network.
- STEM in the Real World: Showing students how the science and math they learn in the classroom turns into the tools we use to keep our community connected.
Fueling Future Ambitions
The energy at the Speedway was infectious. Seeing students’ eyes light up as they realized the “magic” of the internet is actually incredible engineering is exactly why we love participating in STEAM events. These students are the future innovators, engineers, and creators of Wilkes County, and they certainly have the drive to succeed!
A huge thank you to the organizers of the STEAM Expo and to all the students who stopped by our booth to explore the world of fiber with us.
RiverStreet in the Community
At RiverStreet, we believe that investing in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) education is an investment in our local future. Whether we are at a school career day or the historic Wilkesboro Motor Speedway, we are proud to support the next generation of tech leaders.
Missed us at the Expo? If you have a student who is curious about fiber technology or if you’re ready to bring “light speed” internet into your own home, visit our [Sign-Up Page] or stop by our local office to learn more!
